A British Doctor is First Person to Successfully Finish a Plate of World's Hottest Curry

By

British doctor Ian Rothwell has accomplished the seemingly impossible: devouring a plate of curry filled with 20 Naga Infinity chiles, considered to be the second hottest pepper on the planet. Served at the restaurant Bindi, the dish—aptly named “The Widower”—measures at six million units on the Scoville Scale, according to the Daily Mail.

As the article notes, while the Naga Infinity chiles are only the second hottest peppers on the planet, the curry dish is still the world’s hottest. Muhammed Karim, managing director and executive chef at Bindi, tells Short List that 300 people have tried the dish, but none had been able to succeed. That is, until Rothwell decided to take on the challenge.

Rothwell tells Short List,

“I like hot curries and have at least one a week, but this was off the scale. It took me about an hour to eat it and I had to stop halfway through and go out for a walk and some fresh air.”

Thanks to a little rice and a lot of beer, Rothwell managed to finish the challenge, despite hallucinations and a few tears. He explains,

“My wife and the owner were quite worried and said I was hallucinating, but I managed to go back inside and finish the curry. This curry got hotter and hotter as I went on and it was a struggle to finish, but I was determined to succeed.”

We can always get behind someone willing to suffer for their art—like when FWF host Sean Evans and Chili Klaus sampled the world’s hottest pepper, the Carolina Reaper. Those are true tears, folks.
