While other fast-food chains scramble to stuff their menus with as much kale and quinoa as they can find, Taco Bell is busy embracing its reputation as the place to break all New Year’s resolutions. The stunt food innovators have been teasing a new menu item, and according to Brand Eating, it’s extra cheesy.
Meet the Quesalupa, an item that features a “Chalupa-like shell but with a melted cheese core.” Yes, a melted cheese core. It’s like the stuffed crusts of the taco world, and the human race is probably better for it (though your cardiologist may disagree). The item comes filled with the standard taco fixings—seasoned beef, tomato, shredded cheese and lettuce, and sour cream—and will likely also be available in a breakfast version, which is hopefully stuffed with eggs and hash browns.
Brand Eating writes that the cheese-stuffed Chalupa—which has been in the works since at least early 2015 and was supposed to hit stores nationwide at the end of last year—will likely be available across the country the day after the Super Bowl (February 8), which means you have a few weeks to prep your arteries.
It’s not the first time Taco Bell has decided to add an extra layer of cheese to a menu item: The Quesalupa is reminiscent of Taco Bell’s Quesarito, the chain’s popular burrito wrapped in a quesadilla. The hybrid food went on to become one of Taco Bell’s best selling items of all time. First We Feast has reached out to Taco Bell for more information.
