We all know and love the potato. It’s great baked, fried, and made into hasbrowns. But the potato can serve as much more than just a great side dish. One spud photographs so well that people are willing to drop over a million dollars on it.
When you take a peek at renowned photographer Kevin Abosch’s picture of this planet-like lump, it’s hard to determine what you’re looking at. But look a little closer and you’ll find it’s nothing but an average potato.
According to the Sunday Times, the organic potato was photographed with a digital camera under just one light, giving it a larger-than-life appearance.
The photo was so captivating it captured the attention of a European businessman who was willing to spend $1.5 million on a shot of a potato. Abosch tells the Sunday Times, “We had two glasses of wine and he [the businessman] said, ‘I really like that.’ Two more glasses of wine and he said: ‘I really want that,’ “ And just like that, the businessman attained his copy of the coveted potato photograph.
If you’re wondering why the pricey potato sold for such a high price, it’s because the photograph was taken in Abosch’s signature fashion of photographing a high definition object in front of a black background . The potato joins the likes of Johnny Depp in terms of subjects Abosch has photographed in this manner.
Only three prints are in existence. Besides the businessman’s copy, one of the prints is housed in a museum in Serbia while another is displayed in Abosch’s private collection, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
If you think about it, it’s pretty insane to spend one million dollars on a high-resolution photograph of an unwashed potato. It seems like anyone with a photography background could take a similar photo. But hey, if you have the money…
