Television host and chef Alton Brown—who’s web series Cook Smart just premiered on YouTube—has a food hack to solve the problem that no one was complaining about: the Herculean effort of manually grinding pepper.
As unnecessary and impractical as it is, there’s clearly no denying the sheer awesomeness of his creation, a Frankenstein automatic pepper grinder powered by a cordless drill. To make a Pepper Drill, you’ll need a 35 mm film canister and a box cutter; here’s the step-by-step instructions.
Step 1: “Remove the lid from the film canister – set aside. Use the utility knife to cut off the bottom third of the film canister.”
Step 2: “Remove a small round from the top of the film canister and replace the lid on the canister.”
Step 3: “Place the film canister over the pepper mill axel. Insert the grind axel into the drill as you would a drill bit.”
Step 4: “Make sure the grinder is secure before turning the power to high and enjoy the power that is the Pepper Drill.”
