L.A. Essentials: SOSUPERSAM

Phoebe Lovatt (@phoebelovatt) is a born-and-raised Londoner now living in Los Angeles. She writes about food, style, and music for publications including Dazed & Confused, GQ, and Elle, and documents her travel obsession on her own site, anywhere-anywhere.com.

For food-loving DJ and producer SOSUPERSAM (née Samantha Duenas), eating out in L.A. is all about striking a balance. “I just want to eat everything, and I want to eat all the time,” says the Culver City native, who squeezes in four or five dinner reservations a week around gigs for Kiehl’s, Porsche, and Vans, as well as show-openers for the likes of Dam Funk and Childish Gambino. “I love pasta, noodles, and ramen, so I’ll balance that by eating all organic, or vegan, and by drinking a lot of juice. I don’t understand those girls who say, ‘Oh, I forgot to eat today.’ I wake up and go straight to the kitchen.”

I grew up being told I was terrible in the kitchen. But one day I was like, ‘Suck it, mom—I’m learning to cook.’

Sam’s food obsession has resulted in a burgeoning side hustle as an online cooking guru (see her make walnut-stuffed pesto pork roast here) and thrower of epic dinner parties. “The nice thing about L.A. is that people have space to have people over. And kitchens. My boyfriend [fellow DJ and podcaster Them Jeans] and I cook together all the time,” she says (recent sample menu: homemade biscuits and gravy, pumpkin beer-braised pork tenderloin). “He’s helped with my confidence, because I grew up being told I was terrible in the kitchen. But one day I was like, ‘Suck it, mom—I’m learning to cook.’ And I did.”

Read on to discover SOSUPERSAM’s favorite L.A. dining spots, from a hole-in-the-wall Hawaiian café, to the home of a deconstructed Taco Bell burger.
