As one of the country’s most democratic and suggestive foodstuffs, hot dogs have been a lynchpin of American pop culture since kids started racing through the streets trying to catch a glimpse of the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Indeed, some public icons have built their entire careers around our obsession with frankfurters, like the infamous competitive-eating legend Kobayashi. And when it comes to TV, film, and even rap music, tubesteaks are always good for a gag, or a tender moment over mustard-laced wieners.
