Cooking with Models: Watch the First Episode of Well Dunn with Jourdan Dunn

By

British fashion model Jourdan Dunn’s new web cooking show takes us into her kitchen to show us how she gets down when she’s on the road rocking the runway. We first heard word that Jay-Z’s lifestyle website, Life + Times, would be teaming up with Dunn back in October. On her inaugural episode, the Londoner shows us her take on jerk pork, rice and beans, and Caribbean salsa.

For the jerk marinade, she doesn’t de-seed the Scotch Bonnet peppers, because really “what’s the point of having jerk if it’s not going to knock your socks off?” Word. The rest of the recipe calls for fresh garlic, green onions, and ginger. When all four are added to a blender, in goes soy sauce, dark rum (“to give it a little sumthin’-sumhin'”), honey, salt and black pepper, nutmeg, allspice, juice of two limes, lime zest, and olive oil. Her rice and beans and Caribbean salsa seem straightforward as well. The rest of ingredient list is available on the show’s YouTube page.

Dunn is comfortable in front of the camera, and clearly the camera loves her. As she cooks, she chats about her photo shoot with Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia and her belief in that old adage that the path to a man’s heart is through his stomach. (For those who want to know, the man in her life is currently her son, who we learn is also an honest food critic.)

Unlike other cooking shows, there is less emphasis on instruction in the near 8-minute-long video. If you’re closely following for the recipe(s), you’ll find that she glosses over a step or two (or three). No cooking instructions are written on the page, and there’s no link hinting at further info. This means you have to re-watch the vid and guesstimate your way through—perhaps not the worst thing if you like gorgeous women and British accents.

Ultimately, the point seems to be less about actually teaching people how to cook with Dunn, and more about continuing to efforts of Padma Lakshmi and Heidi Klum to show another dimension to models than just their looks.
