For a while, it looked like Australia was leading the international arms race to develop the most insane milkshake of all time. Pâtissez, a bakery and café in Canberra, set the tone last year with the Freakshow, a human-head–size shake packed with Nutella and topped with a whole brownie and toasted marshmallow. Then, Aussie food photographer Alana Dimou took things to the next level by creating wildly calorific monstrosities capped with cheeseburgers and whole roasted chickens.
Not to be outdone, a New York City gastropub called Black Tap, with locations in Soho and Meatpacking, has joined the ranks of do-it-for-the-‘gram milkshake-making, turning out candy-studded, ice-cream-sandwich–crowned jobs that would make Bloomberg cry. The mini chain has been around for about a year, giving the crazy desserts time to make their mark on NYC’s ever-evolving tapestry of stunt food.
Black Tap turns out regular shakes as well, but the $15 XXXL versions are the real draw for people trying to get their blood sugar likes up. The standard lineup includes Sweet N’ Salty, Cookie, and Cotton Candy flavors, but specials like peanut-butter-fluff and caramel-apple are often rotated in.
