Dogfish Head's Sam Calagione Addresses Anheuser-Busch's Controversial Super Bowl Ad

By

Dogfish Head founder and president Sam Calagione is the exact kind of guy you’d want to explain complex concepts to you (over a few beers, of course). He’s genial, animated, and speaks with a laid-back inflection that can make any topic sound interesting but approachable. That’s why he’s a great fit as the host of Dogfish’s new video series, #AskDogfish, where he tackles fan-submitted Twitter questions.

On the premiere episode, Calagione hits on sours, Anheuser-Busch’s Super Bowl ad mocking craft beer, and advice for new brewers. Watch the above video for Calagione’s entire response, which is measured but still makes some key points:

  • It was a good move for Budeweiser as a brand.
  • However, for Anheuser-Busch as a company, the advertisement is a little disingenuous because of the beer titan’s recent craft-beer acquisitions.
  • It makes you question the company’s true intentions.

On the other two topics, Calagione gives a brief-but-insightful breakdown of the company’s history with sours (its first batch confounded stores so much that those carriers sent the beer back), and suggests that new breweries focus on consistently quality and market differentiation.

We’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for future installments of this series.
