If you’re a craft beer nerd, chances are excellent that you’ve learned to handle that love/hate growler relationship.
Growlers are far from perfect, but they’re the most universal way to get your favorite microbrews home from the brewery or pub so you can enjoy them later, in the comforts of your own home.
But traditional growlers have two huge problems: your beer goes flat too quickly, and that glass construction combined with a somewhat unwieldy size make them really fragile.
Those are the problems that Portland, OR-based Growler Werks hopes to solve with the introduction of its brilliant pressurized growler.
The uKeg pressurized growler features practically everything beer nerds have been clamoring for since forever:
- Vacuum insulated, double-walled stainless steel construction is both durable and good at keeping your beer cold
- Customizable carbonation cap that relies on simple 8g CO2 cartridges you can find just about anywhere, from local kitchen stores to Amazon
- Interchangeable tap handle with tap lock for transporting
- Site glass, so you know when it’s time to decide on a refill brew
- Pressure gauge for pulling the perfect pint
- Will be available in both 64 oz. and 128 oz. sizes
Growler Werks is bringing the uKeg to market using Kickstarter, and the project officially launched yesterday morning.
As we write this, $70,488 has already been pledged (out of a $75K goal), with 52 days left in the campaign. It definitely looks like the uKeg project is on.

We all know that special disappointment that only comes when you get your hopes up for a great Kickstarter idea, only to never see the dream realized.
That’s why we love that Growler Werks posted a visual project timeline on their campaign page. It’s no guarantee, but it definitely instills confidence.
As you can see, if things progress according to the timeline, orders are expected to ship out May 1, 2015.
We can’t wait to take our beer canteen with us on walks around the neighborhood. The 128 oz. is probably overkill, but the 64 oz. is totally doable. Bonus: you get a little cardio while you power walk your craft beer through the park.
