“The history of beer is a history of consolidation,” writes Quartz. True words, seeing that 50% of the world’s beer is produced by just six companies.
And the consolidation continues: ABInbev and SABMiller have been discussing a merger for months, according to Quartz and the Wall Street Journal. And SABMiller was rebuffed trying to acquire Heineken. Quartz writes,
“Either deal would create a company responsible for brewing nearly one fifth of the worlds beer or more, and would have continued the concentration of the global beer market—which, as you can see in the graphic above, has substantially conglomerated in recent years.”
As you can see in the chart below, over the past decade, the 10 largest brewers have grown from brewing 48% of the world’s beer to producing 65%.
At this point, you shouldn’t be surprised that Blue Moon is owned by Coors, and Shock Top is brewed by Anheuser-Busch. #Staywoke
